Background of Oeko-Tex (eco-textiles)
In the 1980s, the Austrian Textile Research Center in Vienna offered a set of standards called the OTN -100, for the testing of harmful substances in textiles, clothing and carpets. Other institutes interested in sharing this valuable experience, co-founded the International Association for Research and Testing in the Field of Textile Ecology (abbreviated as Oeko-Tex). The Association developed a set of laboratory test methods and standards for harmful substances.

Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is jointly developed by the Austrian Textile Research Institute and the German Hohenstein Research Institute, which are members of the International Oeko-Tex Association. They were both the earliest members of the body and its founders. In the 1990s, they developed the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 according to their knowledge of hazardous substances in textiles, which was later shown in the Frankfurt exhibition of April 1992. Oeko-Tex Standard 100 includes general regulations and all testing methods, procedures and quality control requirements for textile products (including raw materials, intermediate products and semi-manufactures). According to the product's end use, Oeko-Tex Standard 100 also classifies products into four categories (Ⅰ baby class, Ⅱ direct contact with skin type, Ⅲ no direct contact with the skin type, Ⅳ decorations), and lists the harmful substances and their corresponding limitations.

Oeko-Tex Standard 100 prohibits and restricts the use of the known hazardous substances in textiles including: formaldehyde content, extractable heavy metals, pesticide residues, chlorinated phenols, azo dyes, dye allergies, antibacterial, resistance burning finishing, organic tin compounds, organic plasticizers, color fastness, organic vapors, odors, nickel, lead chloride, organic dye, and so on. As an internationally accredited testing lab, Eurofins can provide you with a complete set of Oeko-Tex Standard 100 testing services.
